Living with Diabetes
Being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes can be overwhelming.
Once the initial shock passes, the intensive education process begins. It's a new way of living and there is so much to learn: nutrition, ketones, glucose levels, monitors, carbohydrate counting, insulin dosages and the list goes on...but you are not alone! The purpose of the Outreach Program is to give a helping hand to families, teens and adults living with type 1 diabetes by connecting them with resources and others who know what it is like to live with the disease. Click the below links to learn more about JDRF's support services.
Outreach & Support Resource Guide
To support our families and provide great resources we have compiled a Resource Page with topics including financial support resources, diabetes at school, traveling with diabetes, tips for T1 college students and diabetes youth camps. In addition, please reach out to the Dallas staff with additional questions or concerns by requesting support.

Newly Diagnosed Parents Group
If your child has been diagnosed recently, please join us the “Win With Diabetes" FREE empowerment group for parents whose children have been recently diagnosed to be held in Richardson, TX and lead by Jeanine Connolly. After diagnosis and hours of education classes, diabetes can become all-consuming and overwhelming as we live with the fact that managing Diabetes is easier said than done. This program provides inspiration, hope & connection immediately after diagnosis.
Jeanine Connolly, MA, Licensed Professional Counselor Intern, was diagnosed in May, 1971 at the age of 4, so she knows what it’s like to grow up with Diabetes. She is a popular speaker and medical family therapist with offices in Richardson and Fort Worth. For additional details, meeting location and to RSVP, contact Jeanine Connolly at jeanine@winwithdiabetes.com, (214) 636-3900 or visit her website at www.WinWithDiabetes.com. [Learn more]

Mentor Families
Our network of mentor families is about sharing, helping, listening, and forming new friendships with people who understand your fears, questions and even your tears. This network operates through the Greater Dallas Chapter of JDRF, but is driven and coordinated by volunteers who have been where you are. Request a Mentor or Learn More
The Bag of Hope
The Bag of Hope, the cornerstone of the Outreach Program, contains useful information such as books and videos about diabetes, a carb counting tool, an Accu-Chek Aviva blood sugar meter, Rufus, the bear with diabetes and more. These bags are graciously underwritten by Roche Diagnostics and with volunteer help are delivered to Children's Medical Center for distribution to newly diagnosed families.
*If you have not requested or did not receive a Bag of Hope from Diabetes 101 class or another JDRF resource, you may request one by contacting Tressa Thomas at tthomas@jdrf.org. Please consider that we have a limited supply and we would like for every newly diagnosed child to have the opportunity to receive one. The JDRF Dallas Team and our underwriting sponsor thank you for your consideration!
Committee Recruiting
30 new families are diagnosed at Children's Medical Center every month, and the Outreach Committee's goal is to support and supply information to all of these families; but we need help to do it. If you would like to assist the Outreach Committee by becoming a JDRF Outreach Mentor, call us for more information.
Adult Type 1 Network Group
JDRF is not just for kids or newly diagnosed! We have a great network group that is just for adults living with type 1 diabetes. The goal of this group is to bring everyone together to share mutual support, exchange information and resources, and hear from guest speakers on a variety of topics. This is a positive atmosphere and a great way to meet other adults living with type 1 diabetes.
Join other adults living with type 1 diabetes on the first Tuesday of every month for an adult DFW Insulin User Group. Enjoy hearing others talk about their diabetes and even hear a speaker at the meetings! For more information, contact Linda with Fifty50 at 972-243-2727. Meetings are held at the following address: 1420 Valwood Parkway, Suite 205, Carrollton, TX 75006
